Work has commenced on 14km of road pavement and drainage upgrades on Galong Road.
Hilltops Council is delivering the project and contributing $200,000 after the NSW Government awarded almost $2.4 million to the project as part of the Restart NSW Fixing Country Roads program and the Australian Government matched the figure under their Heavy Vehicle Safety and Productivity Program.
Hilltops Mayor Brian Ingram is pleased that work has commenced on this valuable project, “Any upgrade to our roads that results in improved safety to users is a positive outcome for the community. I thank both the State and Federal
Government for their contribution toward this project.”
An environmental assessment was undertaken to ensure the impact of the work on neighbouring residents and the wider community is kept to a minimum. To ensure a clear work zone for the project, some trees have had to be removed, with offset planting to replace the removed trees to be undertaken as part of the project.
The work will improve the travelability of the road and road safety for road users, as well as reduce the ongoing maintenance costs to the Council.
Member for Goulburn Wendy Tuckerman said the NSW Government’s investment in Galong Road is part of a $543 million program providing targeted infrastructure funding from the Restart NSW Fund for regional freight projects.
“Improvement of Galong Road will result in significantly reduced costs to
business and industry while driving economic growth.”
“The Fixing Country Roads program is about moving freight more efficiently – supporting jobs, economic growth and productivity in regional NSW. This work links with works already completed on Cunningar Rd and the Tarengo Bridge,” Mrs Tuckerman said.
