Work has started on the upgrade to a 1.6 kilometre section of the Olympic Highway north of Young.

The upgrade is the second stage of a $3.6 million project designed to improve safety on a 2.4 kilometre section of the Olympic Highway between Old Monteagle Road and Apps Lane.

“This section is in need of an upgrade after a review identified safety concerns due to the rough surface of the ageing road,” Member for Cootamundra Steph Cooke said.

The first stage of the project was completed last year, with an upgrade to an 800 metre section of the highway to the west of Apps Lane. Work involved widening the road, improving the road surface, installing safety barriers, upgrading signage and the removal of trees to reduce the risk of a crash.

“The project will continue the upgrade along a further 1.6-kilometre section and will reduce ongoing maintenance costs by preventing further deterioration of the road surface. This stage of work will support 20 jobs, using local workers and Transport for NSW staff,” said Ms Cooke.

Work on the project began on Monday and will continue Monday to Friday from 7am to 6pm and on Saturdays from 8am to 1pm. Weather permitting, the project is expected to be completed by late October.

During some stages of the project there will be changed traffic conditions, including traffic control, lane closures and a reduced speed limit of 40 km/hr. For the latest traffic updates, download the Live Traffic NSW App, visit livetraffic.com or call 132 701.
