The Salvation Army’s Red Shield Appeal is on again this weekend.

Now in its 56th year, the Salvos’ main effort aims to raise $32 million this year nationally. This is to fund more than 2,000 centres and services across Australia.

Locally, the Salvation Army of Young/Cootamundra aims to collect $7,000. Lieutenant Michael Hindle, Corps Officer of the Young/Cootamundra Salvation Army said this will support the region’s Christmas Cheer program.

“Up to 90 per cent of funds stay local in the Riverina. We use these funds to support families through our Christmas Cheer program, helping with food vouchers and toys,” Lt Hindle said.

“The other 10 percent goes to our national mission such as our homelessness support and rehab centres.”

Volunteers are collecting at Westpac and Big W for the rest of the week from 10am to 4pm.

They’ve hosted a Bunnings sausage sizzle, and the Red Shield Family Store was open last Saturday.

“Even if we don’t make our goal, we see the ongoing support from this region. When others are in need, we have witnessed the community spirit in helping others and are glad to be a part of it,” he said.

There is also a sale day at our Cootamundra Red Shield Family Store this Saturday from 9:30am until 3pm.
