St Lawrence to be reopened this year

After St Lawrence Retirement Village closed suddenly at the beginning of the year, Cowra Retirement Village (CRV) announced recommissioning the aged care facility in May.

CRV CEO, Scott Kable said the not-for-profit organisation has applied for a 45-bed licence with St Lawrence set to reopen in stages before the year’s end. Final stages of due diligence are being completed, with CRV setting sustainable viability targets.

“Once we’ve got 20 to 25 people living there, we’d be at a point where we’d be pretty much breakeven,” Mr Kable said.

“We have no expectation that we’re going to fill 45 beds in the next 12 months.”

He said the community has “already been burnt”, and the last thing we want to do is build up an unrealistic expectation.

“I’d much rather under promise and over deliver than to give a really ambitious opening date and then have to delay it,” Mr Kable said.

CRV are confident from a staffing and local goods and service supplier perspective.

“We need a bit of an idea of who is out there in the community that’s ready for care and would come in, might be wanting to relocate back from one of other facilities or are thinking that in the next 12 to 18 months they might be needing residential care,” Mr Kable said.

“We don’t necessarily need people to sign on the bottom line. We just would like an indication.”

He welcomes conversation with any of the previous 35 residents and their families.

Mr Kable is at the Harden Regional Development Corporation office every Thursday between 10am to 12pm to discuss the reopening and the facility.

“Due diligence has been very positive... we’re really excited about it,” he said.
