There are so many bits and pieces that you don’t ever really think twice about before sending them to landfill.
Jenny West has been collecting various things for charitable causes for 20 years.
She collects bread clips, various drink lids and ring pulls for meaningful projects.
“I collect plastic bread clips for Aussie Breadtags for Wheelchairs,” Ms West said.
The tags are given to South Australian plastics recycler, Transmutation - Reduce Reuse and Recycle. The clips are melted down to make bowls and bread boards. The company then makes a donation back to Aussie Breadtags for Wheelchairs, who then fund wheelchairs for disabled and disadvantaged South Africans.
“I also collect lids for Lids4Kids, which is based in Canberra. We accept plain flavoured and UHT milk lids, soft drink and water lids,” she said.
The lids are shredded and given to other groups to make skateboards, bollards and the like.
Ms West said Lids4Kids have saved over 8 tonnes of plastic lids from landfill or 20 million lids.
As an authorised volunteer for Lids4Kids, she has a number of towns with contacts who will collect lids, bread tags and ring pulls on her behalf.
She recycles ring pulls as scrap to raise money for Aussie Kidz. This charity helps fund disability aids, wheelchairs and any other aids for children. She said, regionally 223kgs of metal has been collected.
“I collect lots of stuff for various charities. Plus I am an authorised volunteer for two charities and do stuff of my own for other places,” she said.
