ACT residents were given the green light to travel into the Hilltops as a further addition to the border bubble on Friday.

Residents were allowed to travel into the area from midday today. However, don’t expect the tourists just yet.

ACT Premier Andrew Barr has advised that only essential travel should be undertaken.

He highlighted COVID-19 still prevalent in the state and residents not fully vaccinated.

"The best advice is that if you don't need to travel, don't travel. If you don't need to cross the border, don't cross the border. If you don't need to be in a room full of lots of people, don't be in a room full of lots of people,” Mr Barr said.

"I don't think it's that complicated. Anytime you are near other people, it's a transmission risk. There's still risk.”

The differing cross-border rules have caused confusion for weeks, with residents unclear about when, where and why they can travel.

ACT has followed NSW in adjusting travel rules last week. The NSW rules have been adjusted due to confusion statewide when the lockdowns restictions were eased last Monday.

When in NSW, Canberrans must comply with NSW Health directions, which includes the need to be fully vaccinated before travelling and checking in to many venues.
