On Wednesday 31 March 2021, Malcolm Porritt – a Year 12 Hospitality student at Boorowa Central School – and his Hospitality teacher Miss Williams will head to Sydney to the Royal Easter Show.
Joining them will be hospitality students from Queanbeyan High School and Bowraville Central School.
Malcolm has always shown a keen interest in cooking, particularly in baking.
He currently works at the Superb Bakery in Boorowa where his job spreads from taking orders, making coffees, and baking pastries. Malcolm has been a hospitality student at Boorowa Central School since the beginning of last year, where he has learned about food preparation, safety and hygiene skills, along with serving a diverse range of customers and preparing and serving espresso beverages.
At the Royal Easter Show, Malcolm and his peers will be working for the Rural Students Café, where they will have one day of food preparation in the kitchen, and then two days of serving customers. This is an incredible experience for all students as they are placed in a real-life experience of the hospitality industry, being taught food preparation and serving skills by experienced chefs and trainers.
With the lack of out-of-school learning opportunities last year due to lockdowns and travel restrictions, Miss Williams jumped at the chance for her hospitality students to have a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to work in a simulated environment and gain real-life skills.
