The Rotary Club of Boorowa warmly welcomed Her Excellency Professor Joyce Kikafunda and her staff from the High Commission of the Republic of Uganda to their International Night celebrating Uganda.
The night was a partnership between Rotary, the University of New South Wales (UNSW) and the Ugandan High Commission. Various speakers gave talks on the night.
Patrick Muganda, Minister Counselor, who is from Uganda, spoke of beautiful Uganda, an independent country inciting foreign business enterprise to set up in Uganda and welcoming tourists to visit such a diverse country. Uganda has put its history of the Idi Amin years (ended 1979) in the past and is moving forward to become part of the global economy.
Professor Julian Cox of UNSW spoke of the many university projects there have been over the past five years in partnership with the Gulu University in Uganda in areas of agriculture, engineering and health. He also thanked the Rotary Club of Boorowa and Boorowa farmers for hosting last year’s visiting Ugandan agriculture students.
Stephen Meere, past President of the Rotary Club of Boorowa, spoke of the Club’s willingness to help Ugandan students with ability but the lack of finance to achieve this. He announced the Club will sponsor an agriculture student for their years at university (between four and five), providing a scholarship to the Gulu University.
Apart from the informative speeches, a lot of fun was had with a fundraising auction, raffles and a delightful Ugandan meal prepared by Richard and his team and fellowship amongst the fifty guests who attended the evening.
Thank you to the High Commission staff in providing Ugandan cake/biscuits to go with tea and coffee. Many a thank you were given and special congratulations to Elizabeth Myburgh and her organizing committee on a wonderful night’s experience.
