Boorowa Community Landcare Group (BCLG) recently hosted a bird monitoring training day as part of the Saving Our Superb Parrot (SoS) program.
The day was held on Saturday the 12th of September at ‘Ballagh’ near Boorowa. An early morning walk was lead by local Superb Parrot experts Pat Downey and Pat Thompson to train participants in the correct survey methodology so that bird monitoring data is consistent with regional and state wide databases.
As part of the Saving Our Superb Parrot program, landholders from BCLG and Hovells Creek Landcare Group (HCLG) have fenced off existing paddock trees to protect known Superb Parrot nesting sites, as well as planting understorey shrubs such as wattles, hopbushes and Bursaria (blackthorn) as food sources.
A baseline monitoring station at Chris and Ingrid Corcoran’s ‘Ballagh’ was established, so that monitoring of how the biodiversity changes as the plantings progress could take place.
BCLG is a partner in the Saving Our Superb Parrot program which is funded by the NSW Office of Environment and Heritage (OEH) and supports landholders to take actions to help save the threatened Superb Parrot.
Key strengths of the program to date include the community engagement activities to increase awareness and interest in participating in projects and monitoring the abundance of Superb Parrots at the intervention sites.
