The Hilltops region has been affirmed as a first-class cool climate wine region with seven gold medals at the 2020 NSW Wine Awards.

Cassegrain Wines won a gold medal for their 2019 White Label Shiraz. Nick Spencer Wines won a gold for their 2019 Medium Dry Red Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon, Malbec. Ballinaclash won two gold medals, one for their 2018 John Shiraz and one for their 2019 Tom Cabernet Sauvignon. Hungerford Hill won a gold medal for their 2018 Corvina. McWilliam’s Wines also won two gold medals, with one for their 1877 Hilltops Shiraz and one for their 2019 480 Hilltops Shiraz.

With many wine shows being cancelled this year due to the coronavirus pandemic, the 2020 NSW Wine Awards was one of the only opportunities for wine producers to showcase their wines, which led to a record number of entries. Local wine producers Peter and Cath Mullany of Ballinaclash won medals for all three of the wines they entered into the show, with the two gold medals for their 2018 John Shiraz and 2019 Tom Cabernet Sauvignon as well as a bronze medal for their 2018 Joe Shiraz.

“It is very affirming to win these awards. The Hilltops is a great area for growing cool climate reds and we are constantly striving to produce the best we can,” said owner Cath Mullany. “It is an exciting time to be a part of this emerging region.”

The gold medal wines now move on to the next stage of the Awards and are in the running for a trophy, with the results to be announced at the 2020 ICC Sydney NSW Wine Awards Presentation Luncheon on the 23rd of October.
